Origine géographique : l’espèce est originaire de l'Ouest des USA (Etats de Washington, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, California) et du Canada (Alberta et Colombie britannique). On le trouve jusque vers 1000 d'altitude dans la partie Nord de son aire et entre 1900 et 3000 m dans le Sud. Il affectionne particulièrement un climat humide où les brouillards sont fréquents et où les sols ne sont jamais secs mais conservent bien l'humidité.
