Origine géographique : l’espèce est présente depuis le Sud du Mexique (états d'Oaxaca et Chiapas) jusqu'au Nicaragua en passant par Le Guatémala, Belize, le Honduras et El salvador. Il pousse en climat tropical où la pluviométrie fluctue entre 1000 et 3000 m par an selon les régions avec une période sèche entre novembre et mai. En zone montagneuse, on le trouve entre 1500 et 2900 m dans une atmosphère souvent très humide. Sa vulnaribilité est due à une exploitation importante de son bois. Il a d'ailleurs été introduit au Zimbabwé, en Afrique du Sud, en Australie, en Inde ou au Brésil pour y être cultivé.
